Geological CO₂ storage take longer time than most expect

With the timelines estimated there is a minimum of 7 years from the screening for a potential CO₂ storage site begins, till a site is in operation. The worst case scenarios is 13 years. This is important to keep in mind for the different business cases in the CCS value chain, as any delays might impact the value stream in a negative way. Finding quality storage sites require detailed insights into a storage site appraisal and development, and it will enable ranking of this important perspective of the possibilities to select the best business opportunity.

Getting the numbers right

Even though the more realistic potential is merely a fraction of the theoretical storage capacity communicated in national CO₂ atlases, the storage potential of both UK, Norway and Denmark is still considerable. When the storage capacity estimates at the different levels of maturity are fully understood by more people, it is likely that some business cases will be calibrated. But still, hundreds of millions of tons of CO₂ emitted and captured in Europe can be stored in the North Sea and onshore Denmark.

Can you meet ambitious deadlines – and still raise the bar?

A client had set an ambitious CCS strategy with the goal of becoming a leading CO₂ storage provider. But timing was critical. Since location is everything in CO₂ storage, they needed to move fast – and partner with a team that could screen large areas, identify the best opportunities, and adapt quickly to new insights and strategic targets.

Aligning on risk: A common language in CO₂ storage

There exist a discrepancy between the usage of published CO₂ capacity estimates and their intention. Here we explain why it exist and present the SRMS classifcation framework that is the solution to avoid confusion and uncertainty.

The article also explains the lengthy process of an appraisal and development program for a CO₂ storage site, and why it is a lengthy process to mature a potential CO₂ storage site from an idea in a screening project to achieve actual operational status.
